Real Sociedad re-activate interest in 15-goal striker currently in line for Spain recall in September

Getafe’s 1-1 draw away to Athletic Club on Thursday was already impressive, but it was made even more so by the fact that Jose Bordalas did not have a striker to call upon for the trip to San Mames. Borja Mayoral, who recently recovered from a serious knee injury, was not risked, having played zero minutes during pre-season.

A reason for Mayoral’s absence over the summer has been to do with an expected move away from Getafe. Villarreal and Real Sociedad have both shown strong interest in the 27-year-old, who scored 15 goals in La Liga last season. The former are no longer keen, which leaves La Real with a clear shot.

La Real had cooled their interest in recent weeks, but Noticias de Gipuzkoa have reported that they are now looking to close a deal with Getafe. However, that would only happen if the asking price dropped to €15m.

That may not happen, as Diario AS say that Getafe are now more likely to keep Mayoral at the club for this season. Bordalas would be more than happy with this, although it’s also noted that a sale would massively help with the club’s financial problems.

The report also states that Mayoral has been included in Luis de la Fuente’s pre-list for Spain’s UEFA Nations League fixtures in September. He’ll be hoping to play some football before these games, although it’s yet to be seen whether he’d be in the blue of Getafe, or the blue-and-white of Real Sociedad.
